Equity Advocate | Cultural Strategist | Founder, ACAMHA | Trustee

I’m Elizabeth-Mya, but I prefer to be called Mya. I’m an equity advocate, cultural strategist, and founder of the African Caribbean Asian and Mixed Heritage Association (ACAMHA). My work is grounded in a deep commitment to justice, representation, and the belief that every person deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued.

My journey into advocacy began with lived experience - as a Black woman of African heritage in the UK, navigating systems that were not designed with us in mind. I recognised early on how often our stories were erased, misunderstood, or marginalised.

In 2020, I created Mixed, Blessed and Blended - a safe space for connection and celebration, where families could honour their heritage, culture, and traditions while embracing others. That small community seed has since grown into ACAMHA, a bold platform that challenges racism, dismantles stereotypes, and uplifts underrepresented voices.

At ACAMHA, I lead initiatives focused on education, cultural equity, and structural transformation. One of my proudest achievements has been co-creating an anti-racism education subgroup in collaboration with Highland Council and Highland One World—working to make education more inclusive, honest, and empowering for all learners.

I also serve as a trustee for Refugee Sanctuary Scotland and the Scottish International Development Alliance, where I contribute to global justice initiatives through the Global Citizenship steering group. In 2024 and 2025, I participated as a volunteer panellist at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68 and CSW69), contributing to global dialogues on gender justice, intersectionality, and the importance of elevating the voices of women and girls too often overlooked in policymaking.

In 2024, I was honoured to receive a Creative Lives Award, celebrating the impact of community-rooted cultural work. That same year, I was named one of the 100 Most Influential Black People in Scotland during Black History Month - an acknowledgment that deeply affirms my personal and professional journey.

At my core, I believe in the power of culture, the necessity of connection, and the radical act of creating spaces where every identity is honoured and every story matters. My work isn’t about ticking boxes - it’s about rewriting narratives, dismantling barriers, and shaping a future in which equity isn’t an ambition - it’s a lived reality.

Remi
I'm Remi, co-founder  and secretary of ACAMHA. I take meeting minutes, write up funding applications, write reports for ACAMHA and help organise events.

I also have an eagle eye for research and take interest in where I feel our voice as People of Colour will be valued.

I really value working in partnership with other organisations as there's so many benefits in working this way.

I work in Child Bereavement, for a Highland charity, and am a student with Leeds Beckett University, studying a Postgraduate in Play Therapy, a form of child psychotherapy.

Lastly, I love good music and dancing and feel these two things connect me to my cultural heritage.

I look forward to see you at our next event!
